🌑 Samhain, a sabbath of death, memory and rebirth

Samhain is celebrated when light fades , leaves fall , and nature enters a cycle of rest. It is the ultimate witches' Sabbath, the spiritual New Year for Wicca and many Pagan traditions . It honors the cycles of death and rebirth , pays homage to ancestors , and symbolically prepares one 's soul for winter .

However, Samhain is not a sad holiday . It is a sacred time of returning to oneself, of taking stock, of anchoring , and of deep connection to the invisible .

🎃 What do Wiccans celebrate instead of Halloween?

Where Halloween has become a commercialized holiday centered on disguises and candy , Wiccans celebrate Samhain as a sacred and introspective holiday . Rather than fear of spirits, we cultivate connection with deceased souls , gratitude for the lessons of the past , and openness to subtle messages.

It is a good time to communicate with your guides, receive signs, or even purify your home to welcome winter with serenity .

🌿 Preparing your Samhain ritual: atmosphere, plants and symbols

Creating a ritual space for Samhain is like opening an inner sanctuary . Here are some elements you can incorporate :

đŸ”„ Sacred plants of Samhain:

  • Rosemary: to purify, remember and protect .
  • Thyme: for grounding and connection to ancestors .
  • Sage: to chase away stagnant energies .
  • Dead leaves and acorns: symbols of the end of a cycle.

Place these plants around your altar, burn them as a fumigation or slip them into a ritual infusion.

💎 Samhain Stone: Obsidian

A stone of protection and truth , obsidian acts like a mirror. It allows you to explore your dark sides , to face what you no longer want to carry, and to cut toxic ties. Perfect for Samhain, it cleanses the past and opens the way to a new vision.

You can meditate with it, carry it with you or place it on your altar during the ritual.

ᚱ Recommended rune : Raido (ᚱ )

This rune symbolizes travel, transition, and evolution . It accompanies you on the inner journey that Samhain offers: leaving the old behind to be better reborn . You can trace it on a black candle or engrave it on a piece of wood to keep on your altar. Handcrafted Viking talisman engraved with an energy rune - perfect for magical practices and grounding

🌘 What ritual should I do on October 31st for Samhain?

Here's a simple and profound ritual to celebrate Samhain at home, even if you 're new to witchcraft .

✹ Prepare your sacred space

Before you begin, choose a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Place a few candles (black, purple, or white, depending on your intention), seasonal herbs like rosemary or thyme, and draw your circle of protection. You can use chalk, salt, or simply visualize a protective light surrounding you.

To anchor the energy and strengthen this symbolic barrier, place protective stones at the four cardinal points:
– Labradorite to ward off unwanted energies,
– Black obsidian to dispel fears and stay connected to the Earth,

– Amethyst to raise consciousness and calm the mind,
– Clear quartz to keep your feet on the ground while welcoming subtle messages.

These crystals act as silent guardians for the duration of your ritual.

🕯 Preparation :

  • Turn off the lights , light some candles (white and black).
  • Create a circle of protection around your space. You can use chalk, salt, or simply visualize a protective light surrounding you .
  • Arrange your plants, your stone and your rune.

✹ The ritual :

  1. Purification : burn rosemary, sage or Palo Santo to purify energies,
  2. Invocation : Call the ancestors , thank them. You can put a photo or write their first names ,
  3. Liberation : Write down on a piece of paper what you want to leave behind ( fears, patterns , relationships, habits),
  4. Transmutation : Burn this paper in a fireproof bowl , with the intention of freeing yourself , and above all take the time to feel this step,
  5. Renewal : Light a new candle and speak out loud your intentions for the new cycle.

End the ritual with a moment of silence, or a guided meditation with your obsidian.
